About Functional Medicine Health Coaching

What does a Health Coach Do?
Health coaches work in partnership with you to help you meet your health and wellness goals. We are particularly skilled in assisting you to make dietary and lifestyle changes (improving sleep, weight loss, implementing exercise, starting a mindfulness practice, etc.), but can help you achieve any goals you might have. Essentially, a health coach is there to support you in making and breaking habits.
What is Functional Medicine?
Functional Medicine is a patient-centered approach that addresses the whole person rather than a set of symptoms. Functional medicine practitioners spend time listening to you and learning about your history to see the intersections among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence your long-term health and the formation of complex chronic disease.
The number of people living with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, mental illness and autoimmune disorders is rapidly increasing. While the traditional western medicine paradigm works wonderfully for acute care (short term illnesses or injury), it lacks an effective approach to preventing and treating complex chronic diseases.
Functional Medicine takes a systems biology approach to understanding the origins, prevention, and treatment of complex, chronic disease by using a patient-centered, holistic, integrative, and science based approach.

What should I expect when working with a Functional Medicine Practitioner?
Functional medicine practitioners promote wellness by assessing the underlying factors that contribute to health and disease including environmental inputs, mind-body connections, and genetics. These practitioners work in active partnership with you to help you change your health outcomes and find wellness.
What is different about Functional Medicine Certified Health Coaches?
A Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach (FMCHC) has completed at least one year of training, including hundreds of hours of supervised coaching. As a FMCHC, I am specifically trained to collaborate with Functional Medicine Physicians and other Functional Medicine Practitioners. I also use Functional Medicine and Positive Psychology tools to help you understand your symptoms and history and to co-create strategies to improve your health and wellness.
